“I never understood Tyson Fury” Mike Tyson full interview | Round 12: Fury’s Resurrection

“I never understood Tyson Fury”
Mike Tyson speaks about his namesake and how he became a fan of the Gyspy King, and what went through his mind during that first fight.
How did Tyson Fury bounce back after battles with depression and substance abuse?
Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson recently sat down for an in-depth interview with ESPN+ where he opened up about his take on the current heavyweight scene. One of the most interesting parts of the conversation was when Tyson spoke about current WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
Tyson admitted that he never truly understood Fury, but that he has always been intrigued by him nonetheless. The former champ described Fury as a “paradox” and praised his ability to bounce back after personal struggles.
“He’s a fascinating guy,” Tyson said. “I never understood him. But he comes back from everything. From mental health [problems], from drug abuse. He comes back and beats the guy that nobody can beat.”
Tyson’s sentiments are shared by many boxing fans who have watched Fury’s career unfold. The British boxer has had his fair share of setbacks, including battles with depression and substance abuse, but he has always managed to bounce back.
In 2015, for example, Fury shocked the world by ending Wladimir Klitschko’s long reign as heavyweight champion. However, shortly after the fight, he spiraled into depression and substance abuse and a series of personal issues kept him out of the ring for two years.
But then, in 2018, Fury made his comeback with a stunning performance against Deontay Wilder. In a fight that ended in a draw, Fury showed incredible heart and toughness, getting up from two knockdowns and nearly winning the fight.
Since then, Fury has gone on to win the WBC heavyweight title and is widely regarded as the top heavyweight in the sport. As Tyson noted, his resilience and ability to come back from tough situations is one of the things that makes him so fascinating.
“He’s a paradox, he’s an interesting guy,” Tyson said. “Tyson Fury’s one of the greatest fighters that I’ve seen in my lifetime.”
Overall, Tyson’s comments on Fury illustrate the respect and admiration that many in the boxing world have for him. Despite his often controversial behavior and outspoken personality, there is no denying Fury’s talent and resilience. As he continues to dominate the heavyweight division, it will be fascinating to see where his career goes next.
