A San Diego Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner successfully subdued a burglar at his father’s residence using a precise triangle choke.

Sergio Hernandez, a BJJ black belt and tattoo artist, utilized 14 years of grappling experience under trainer Baret Yoshida to neutralize a 21-year-old intruder in July 2018. After discovering the home had been ransacked, Hernandez chased the suspect through a nearby alley before pinning him and awaiting the arrival of San Diego police.

Once the suspect resisted, Hernandez executed the BJJ technique to ensure the burglar could not escape before law enforcement arrived.

During the struggle, the suspect audibly pleaded for Hernandez to let go of his neck. Hernandez, a veteran of The Arena gym, held the position with high technical discipline, intentionally staying on his side to minimize the risk of being slammed or bitten. This controlled application of leverage neutralized the threat without causing unnecessary physical damage to the combative individual.

Viral Aftermath

Following the arrival of the police and the conclusion of the incident, Hernandez did not pause his professional life. He left the scene to attend a pre-scheduled tattoo appointment and remained unaware of the digital firestorm he had caused. It was only when news crews arrived at his workplace 45 minutes later that he realized the cell phone footage recorded by a neighbor had gone viral on Instagram.
