The Staples Center hosted a public farewell for Kobe and Gianna Bryant on February 24, 2020.

The “A Celebration of Life” memorial gathered approximately 20,000 mourners at the Staples Center to honor Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna. The service occurred nearly one month after the January 26 helicopter crash in Calabasas that claimed their lives and seven others.

The Commemorative Setting

The arena floor featured a 24-foot-by-24-foot stage encircled by 35,000 red roses. Attendees received commemorative programs, T-shirts, and pins as they filed into the sold-out venue. The ceremony concluded with a final screening of Bryant’s Oscar-winning short film, “Dear Basketball.”

Voices of the Memorial

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel served as the master of ceremonies, introducing a series of tributes from those closest to the Bryants. Vanessa Bryant delivered a eulogy, identifying Kobe as the “MVP of girl dads” and describing Gianna as a “sweet and gentle soul” who was destined for the WNBA. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka revealed that Kobe had texted him from the helicopter minutes before the crash, requesting assistance for a friend’s daughter.

Basketball icons shared personal reflections on the bond between the father and daughter. Michael Jordan, visibly weeping, joked about the prospect of another “crying meme” while honoring his friend. Shaquille O’Neal recounted a past exchange where he told Kobe there was “no I in team,” to which Kobe replied, “I know, but there’s an M-E in that motherf—er.” WNBA stars Diana Taurasi and Sabrina Ionescu also addressed the crowd to honor Gianna’s pursuit of the game.

Musical Tributes

The service featured several musical performances to mark the occasion. Beyoncé opened the memorial with renditions of “XO” and “Halo.” Later in the program, Alicia Keys performed “Moonlight Sonata,” and Christina Aguilera sang “Ave Maria.” These performances followed the tone set by the basketball community’s collective effort to process the loss of the franchise legend and his daughter.

The Lakers return to the court at the Staples Center on February 25 to host the New Orleans Pelicans, marking the team’s first home game since the tragedy.
