Tom Herman, the head coach of the University of Texas football team, recently referred to the state of Texas as “the mecca of college football”. This statement came during an interview with Golic and Wingo, where he emphasized the significance of football in the Lone Star State.

Herman’s claim is supported by the impressive football history of Texas. The state has produced several legendary names in college football, including Earl Campbell, Vince Young, and Johnny Manziel. Moreover, Texas has three major college football programs namely, the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, and Texas Christian University, which have amassed impressive numbers in terms of national championships, Heisman Trophy winners, and All-Americans.

The University of Texas football program alone boasts four national titles, a staggering 58 conference titles, and nine Heisman Trophy winners. Texas Christian University may not have the same championship pedigree as its rivals but boasts of a rich football culture and has had several successful seasons in recent years.

Apart from these three major college football programs, Texas has several other smaller universities with proud football traditions, such as Southern Methodist University, Baylor University, and the University of Houston.

Beyond the rich football history of the state, Herman also made reference to the passion of Texas football fans. He spoke of how football was ingrained in the culture of Texas, and how high school football games were often attended by thousands of fans, with some outdoing many college games in terms of attendance.

However, critics of Herman’s claim argue that while Texas has a rich football culture, other states such as Alabama, Ohio, and Florida could lay claim to being the “mecca” of college football as well. These states have consistently produced talented football players and have dominant college football programs such as the University of Alabama, Ohio State University, and the University of Florida.

Regardless, it is clear that Texas is a football powerhouse, and its significance in the college football world cannot be downplayed. Between the passionate fans, the impressive college football programs, and the rich history of the sport in the state, Texas is indeed a mecca of college football.
